periodic trends to finding strong/weak acids and bases
Which periodic trend can explain why an acid or base is strong/weak?

Atomic radius can explain why an acid or base is strong. The larger the molecule is, the weaker that the bond between the hydrogen and the nonmetal is. For example, HF is a weak acid because the fluorine atom is so small and is able to be closely bonded to the hydrogen. This makes it difficult to dissociate completely. HI, hydroiodic acid, is a strong acid because it's able to dissociate completely. A large molecule will have a much easier time dissociating than a smaller atom like fluorine.

Hello,
Another characteristic found in the periodic table is the amphoteric compounds. Amphoteric compounds have both acidic and basic characteristics depending on the condition, so they can accept or donate at least one proton. These compounds are often metalloids.
Hope this helps!
