Knowing pH from H or OH concentration

Postby Chelsea Greene 1L » Sun Dec 05, 2021 11:15 pm

In the recent homework some questions asked to rank the pH levels from acidic to basic using concentrations of [H+] and [OH-]. How do we approach these problems?

Neutral solution is pH=7
Acidic solution has a high [H+], a low [OH−], and
a low pH
Basic solution has a low [H+], a high [OH−], and
a high pH

Acids (H) have a pH under 7 and bases (OH) have a pH above 7.

A pH of 7 is a neutral solution

An acidic solution has a pH less than 7 (high hydrogen ion concentration and a low hydroxide ion concentration)

A basic solution has a pH greater than 7 (low hydrogen ion concentration and a high hydroxide ion concentration)

if we see in the equation for example that there is a strong acid, the solution will likely still be acidic.

In addition to the posts above, Ill add that the concentration of OH and H are inversely related, which helps us figure out their values.

Take the -log of either concentration for either pH or pOH respectively

pH = 14.00 - pOH = -log[H+]
pOH = 14.00 pH = -log[OH-]

pH=-log[H+]
pOH=-log[OH-]
pH+pOH=14

As others have mentioned you find the negative log of the given morlarity, but depending on whether the molecule is an acid or a base, you would either get pH or pOH and have to use the equations.
