Textbook Question 6D13

Postby Mia_Renna_1L » Tue Jan 24, 2023 7:08 pm

Can someone please explain this problem? Are we just supposed to memorize what is a weak / strong acid or base? Is there a way to calculate the pH with the given concentration? I'm not sure how to calculate the pH here, and I'm not sure how to order these in order of increasing strength in another way.

I think we are supposed to memorize the strong acids/bases. Based on what is strong, we can assume that everything else would be considered a weak base/acid. In terms of understanding which one is stronger if unsure, you can use the kPA and the ka values to figure this out. The higher the Ka/Kb value is for an acid or base, the stronger it is and the lower the pKa/pKb value is for an acid or base, the stronger it is. You can calculate these values if possible to determine which acids or bases are stronger and weaker.

higher Ka or Kb ---> stronger acid or base
lower pKa or pKb ----> stronger acid or base

Does anyone know how to solve for the pH for part B?
