Protonated Acid

Postby isha dis3d » Mon Dec 07, 2020 12:12 pm

In the lecture, Dr. Lavelle referred to protonated and alkaline solutions, what exactly does this mean?

Protonation just means that the compound adds an H+ (i.e. a proton). So protonation in water would be like the acid losing an H+, while a water molecule (H2O) adds a proton forming a hydronium ion.
Alkaline solutions are those that have a pH >7 (i.e. basic solutions).

To add on to the first reply, protonated solutions are the same as acidic solutions (by the Bronsted definition) because the acids have an added proton, or H+.
Alkaline solutions are the same as basic solutions.

Protonated or protonation is basically adding a proton to an atom.
An alkaline solution are basic solutions. (pH greater than 7)
