Polyprotic Acids and Varying Stability

Postby Wesley Greene » Sun Jan 28, 2024 11:22 pm

Can someone please explain the varying stability of polyprotic acids to me? I remember reviewing that after the first dissociation, there is a change in stability or some relationship between stability and the dissociation.

As a polyprotic acid loses its first H+, it becomes harder and harder to remove H+'s from the same acid. Therefore, the atoms becomes more stable, but harder to dissociate. This means that Ka1>> Ka2, as the acid becomes a weaker and weaker base.
