equilibrium constants

Postby Geoffrey Yang 3E » Wed Jan 31, 2024 5:24 pm

For a weak, polyprotic acid, does the equilibrium constants of subsequent steps increase, decrease or stay they same?

Hi!

In general, the equilibrium constants K decrease the more protons you take off since it gets harder and harder (requires more and more energy) in order to take them off. Thus, the product concentrations of each subsequent reaction will decrease relative to the previous, resulting in K2 (second H+ dissociation) being smaller than K1 (first), and K3 being smaller than K2, etc. Hope that helps!
