Monoproctic vs. diproctic

Postby Janelle2E » Tue Feb 20, 2024 2:52 am

What is the difference between monoproctic and diproctic acids? Why is it important? Can someone give examples of situations of when we need to differentiate between the 2?

Monoproctic and diproctic acids differ in the number of hydrogen ions they can donate when dissolved in water. Monoporctic acids can only donate one proton per molecule. Diprotic acids can donate two protons per molecule. This is extremely important for preparing buffer solutions.

Hi!
like their name suggests, monoproctic only donates one proton (mono), while diproctic donates 2 protons. This tends to happen when they ionize. hope this helps
