In a reaction with a polyprotic acid, does it lose one of it protons and then the others in separate reactions or does it donate multiple protons at once?

In polyphonic reactions protons are lost successively. So several reactions occur one after another and a single proton is removed in each one.

Only one proton is lost per reaction so over several reactions, multiple protons can be lost.
