What Does Monoprotic Mean?

Postby Eliana Carney 3E » Fri Jan 15, 2021 10:43 pm

Hey guys!
A couple of the questions in the Week 2 Sapling homework say that a given substance is a monoprotic weak acid. I was wondering, what does monoprotic mean in terms of the acid? Thanks in advance!

A monoprotic acid is an acid that can only donate one proton like HCl. On the other, a polyprotic acid is an acid that can donate multiple protons like H3PO4 because it has 3 hydrogens that can be donated.

Monoprotic acids can only give away one proton, while polyprotic acids can donate more than one. I believe it is the same rule for monoprotic bases, where a monoprotic base can only accept one proton.

It means the acid can only donate a single proton.

It means it can only donate one proton. Usually, these acids only have one H atom or have an H that is part of a functional group.

Monoprotic describes a compound that can only donate one proton or H+ to another compound.

A monoprotic acid will only be able to donate one proton so it will only have 1 H in the name, such as HCl or HF. This also means that there will only be one reaction for complete deprotonation instead of successive reactions.

Monoprotic acids can only donate one H+ ion, hence the "mono" in the name. Other acids that can donate more than H+ ion, such as H2SO4, are polyprotic acids

Monoprotic just means one (mono) proton (protic)! So a monoprotic acid can only donate one hydrogen. HCl, HBr, and HI are all examples of monoprotic acids.

Monoprotic in comparison to polyprotic, like the prefix indicates, is how many protons(H+ ions) an acid can donate.

During dissociation, monoprotic acids will only be able to give away a hydrogen atom or proton to the solution. These are different than polyprotic acids, which can donate more than one proton.

A monoprotic acid is only able to donate a single H+. Hope this helps!

A monoprotic acid is an acid that can only donate one proton. This is the opposite of a polyprotic acid, which can donate two protons per molecule.

The acid can only donate a single proton.
