Polyprotic Acids

Postby 105691548 » Tue Jan 18, 2022 4:20 pm

What is the difference between a polyprotic acid/base and a lewis acid/base?

Polyprotic just means that the species can give more than one proton in the reaction (so more than one H+ is given/received). Hope this helps :)

A polyprotic acid is an acid that can give off multiple protons. For example, H2SO4. It can give off one H, and then another after, so it is polyprotic. A lewis acid is a different concept. A lewis acid accepts an electron pair.

These two terms don't necessarily have a strong correlation. A polyprotic acid just means that this acid can give off more than one H+ proton.
