% Protonated vs % Ionization

Postby Manahil Gill 1K » Fri Jan 26, 2024 11:43 am

I understand how to calculate these values, but am having trouble understanding what they mean conceptually. Could somebody explain this concept to me?

Also, I'm wondering what the difference is between these two. I know that percent protonated pertains to bases, and percent ionization refers to acids, but how are they different besides that?

The key difference is that percent protonation refers to bases gaining protons, while percent ionization refers to acids losing protons. But they both quantify the degree to which the molecules are participating in proton transfer reactions.
