Telling if oxides are acidic or basic

Postby Kendall_Chaffin_3C » Tue Nov 29, 2016 10:27 am

How do you tell if an oxide is acidic, basic, or amphoteric?

For example question 12.17 asks to state whether the following are acidic, basic, or amphoteric:
a. BaO
b. SO3
c. As2O3
d. Bi2O3

Oxides of the first two groups are basic and as you move towards the right the acidic nature of the oxides start to increase. The oxides on the far right are always acidic but the ones in the middle may be amphoteric or acidic. There are only a few amphoteric oxides so I'd reccomend that you memorize them all.
