strong acid/base?

Postby Nicole Jacobs 1C » Mon Dec 04, 2017 12:44 pm

How can you tell it is a strong acid or strong base just by looking at the molecular formula?

Yes, from the MF you can infer the lewis structure, and from the lewis structure you can infer the stability of the bonds involving H and see if there are lone pairs on atoms. The less stable the molecule the more readily it behaves as an Acid or Base (given it can give/accept lone pairs/H+s). Consequently the stronger conjugate A or B, the stronger the corresponding B or A (less stable).

Another way to identify strong acid is to see the difference in electronegativity. If there is more difference in electronegativity, it will weaken the bond and make the acid stronger.

Strong Bases are determined by the first two groups of elements(Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals) paired with hydroxide ions (OH-)
