Why are cations from group 1 and 2 weak Lewis acids?

Cations in these groups only have charges of 2+ or 1+, which is not often a high enough charge (unless you’re talking about transition metals with such charges) to break other molecules’ bonds and bond with them. For example, a sodium cation’s 1+ Charge is not enough to break oxygen’s bond with hydrogen in a water molecule and bond with the remaining OH.
