identify base/acid from lewis structure

Postby Vanessa Reyes_1K » Thu Dec 06, 2018 11:51 pm

I'm still confused on how to determine if a molecule is an acid or base from the lewis structures...can someone explain?

An acid has the ability to donate a proton, whereas a base has the ability to accept another proton, or H molecule.

Generally, a molecule with lone pairs on central atom will be electron donor which is Lewis base, and if the central atom has only six valence electrons it’s Lewis acid because it will be electron acceptor.
