What are salts...

Postby Michelle Wang 4I » Sat Dec 08, 2018 8:46 pm

Please help, I don't understand salts at all. What are they and how do they lower/raise pH of solutions?

There are acidic salts and basic salts. An example of an acidic salt that would lower the pH would be NH4Cl.

Salts are basically just ionic compounds such as NaCl. They raise or lower pH by ionizing in solution and either creating more hydronium or hydroxide ions. An example of an acidic salt would be NH4Cl. In solution, the NH4 would donate its H proton to H20 creating H30+. more acidic!

Salts are ionic compounds formed by a neutralization reaction between an acid an a base, such as NaCl, or common table salt. Salts can either raise or lower the pH of a solution - if the salt of a strong base and weak acid is dissolved in water, it will form an alkaline (basic) solution, whereas, the salt of a weak base and strong acid will form an acidic solution.

Salts are just ionic compounds, they change the pH of a solution because they dissolve in water and then the ions from the salts can either bond with H+ or OH- to change the pH.
