What is a Salt?
This feels like a dumb question, but what exactly is a salt? I know that they're the result of an acid-base neutralization reaction, but are there any other specifics about them?

Re: What is a Salt?
A salt is essentially an ionic compound with a cation and an anion. You are correct that they are formed in acid+base reactions but they are not only limited to those types of reactions. Any ionic compound is a salt.

Re: What is a Salt?
hi! A salt is an ionic compound, with both an anion and a cation. It can also become basic or acidic when in an aqueous solution depending on if the cation or anion belong to weak acids or bases

Re: What is a Salt?
A salt is an ionic compound formed from an acid base neutralization reaction. Stable salts are usually composed of a metal (from the base) and a nonmetal (from the acid) however in equilibrium reactions, other salts can form. Water is also created in the neutralization reaction.

Re: What is a Salt?
Salt is produced by the reaction of an acid with a base. A salt consists of the positive ion (cation) of a base and the negative ion (anion) of an acid

Re: What is a Salt?
It's a cation and an anion that are attracted to one another through ionic bonds! Such as NaCl, KCl, etc

Re: What is a Salt?
Its an ionic compound meaning its bounded by ionic bonds. A cation + and anion = salt

Re: What is a Salt?
My understanding of a salt is that it is formed through an acid-base reaction and is composed of an anion and a cation, with the cation often being a metal and the anion being a nonmetal.

Re: What is a Salt?
A salt is an ionic compound formed in an A/B reaction. Salts can be basic, acidic, or neutral depending on whether the acids and bases were strong or weak.
SA + WB = acidic salt. (NH4Cl)
WA + SB = basic salt. (Na3PO4)
SA + SB = neutral salt. (NaCl)
The salt of a WA and a WB can be acidic or basic, depending on the Ka/Kb of the acid and base, respectively.
Hope this answers your question!
