memorize acids and bases

Postby Emily Wu 2G » Mon Oct 04, 2021 2:22 pm

Hey! I was wondering if anyone know if we need to memorize the list of weak acids and bases and strong acids and bases at any point this quarter?

thanks, Emily.

I can't find a list of strong acids and bases on Dr. Lavelle's formula sheets, so I think that you would have to memorize it. We had to memorize the strong acids and bases in AP Chem so I'd assume that it'd be the same scenario here.

I'm pretty sure the prof. will mention if we need to memorize strong vs. weak acids and bases, but that would probably take while because this unit takes a few weeks.

Some ways to remember the characteristics of acids and bases are that acids in water loses an H+ and H2O will pick it up to form H3O+. Meanwhile for bases in water will produce OH-.

I remember having to memorize a few acids and bases from AP Chem, but I believe it will be explicitly told to us what we need to know in particular!

Even if it's not required, the strong acids and bases are good things to know. Strong bases are the hydroxides of group 1 and 2 elements (except Sr, Ba, Ra) and strong acids can be memorized by the mnemonic "SPN IBC" (pronounced "sippin' IBC, like the root beer). This stands for sulfuric, perchloric, nitric, hydroiodic, hydrobromic, hydrochloric.

This is very helpful! I'll definitely be using it to memorize the strong acids, which I was having a hard time memorizing.

Is there any update if we have to memorize acids and bases, or if anyone has a list to reference so that I study!

I think it would be better if we could remember some of the weak/strong acids and bases!

I believe that you do have to memorize them but a trick that can work is recognizing if there is a carboxyl (COOH) group or not. A carboxyl group indicates a weak acid.

The list of strong acids and bases isn't too long (there's a list embedded in one of the achieve homework assignments), so it might be safe just to memorize it :)

It is probably safer to memorize the list of strong acids and bases because then everything else would be weak acids or bases.
