acidic and basic salts

Postby Jenna 1G » Sun Nov 28, 2021 5:06 pm

decide whether aqueous solutions of the salts (a) Ba(NO2)2, (b) CrCl3, and (c) NH4NO3 are acidic, neutral, or basic
can someone help me step by step to solve this problem, thank you

In questions like this I use the following summary:

S.A + S.B -> Neutral Salt + H2O
S.A + W.B -> Acidic Salt + H2O
W.A + S.B -> Basic Salt + H2O
W.A + W.B -> Neutral Salt + H2O

(a) Ba(NO2)2
Assuming this is made of HNO2 [ Weak acid ] and Ba(OH)2 [Strong base]
Therefore it is basic solution
(b) CrCl3
Assuming this is made of HCl [ Strong acid ] and Cr(OH)3 [Weak base]
Therefore it is acidic solution
(c) NH4NO3
Assuming this is made of HNO3 [ Strong acid ] and NH4OH [Weak base]
Therefore it is acidic solution
