Identifying whether the cation comes from a strong acid or base

Postby Jocelynn Franco 1L » Tue Nov 30, 2021 8:06 pm

In order to identify whether a salt is acidic, basic or neutral, I'm supposed to decide whether the cation comes from a strong base and if the anion came from a strong acid (by my understanding, this indicates a neutral charge). If the cation is a conjugate acid from a weak base, then the salt will be acidic and if the anion is a conjugate base from a weak acid, then the salt will be basic. Can someone clarify what this means? How do I figure out whether it's a conjugate acid/base

You seem to be on the right track. Everything that you said is correct. A conjugate acid is going to contain one more H atom and a conjugate base is going to have one less H atom. Make sure to remember a conjugate base is paired with an acid and a conjugate acid is paired with a base.
