What Exactly Is A Salt?

Postby Karen Harrison 1L » Tue Nov 30, 2021 11:48 pm

My question is what the title is.
What chemically classifies a salt? Can there be more acidic or more basic salts out there? How can you identify a salt by looking at a molecular formula?

A salt is an ionic compound (usually made up of a nonmetal and a metal -- so this is something you can look out for in the molecular formulas). There are acidic and basic salts. This can be determined by creating a chemical equation that represents the formulation of the salt. For example, to create the salt NaCl, NaOH reacts with HCl to make NaCl and water. This salt is neutral because both the acid and base that reacted to create it are strong acids and bases. However, when a reaction is written out and a strong acid (or base) reacts with a weak base (or acid), this is an indication that a salt is acidic (or basic).
