Group 1 and 2 elements with pH

Postby Jocelyn Ni 3C » Sat Jan 28, 2023 1:48 pm

Hi, I was told that group 1 and 2 elements don't affect pH, but for a salt, if its cation is from a strong base and anion from a weak acid, it is considered to be basic. For example, Na2S. However, Na is from group and it made the salt basic. How should I interpret this?

Hi! I believe that for salt solutions, their pH depends on the relative acidity or basicity of the ions. So, in that case, if the cations are from groups 1 and 2, that would mean the cation would be considered neutral and combined with whatever the anion is (acidic, neutral, or basic), it would determine the pH of the solution.
