How to determine if something is a weak acid or weak base

Postby carlee_romero_3A » Mon Feb 06, 2023 9:39 pm

I would like clarification on how to determine if something is a weak acid or a weak base. From the lectures Dr.Lavelle talks about if something has a long Nitrogen pair: however how to do you determine if it has a lone nitrogen pair just from the equation.

Basically, if it isn't a strong acid, its a weak acid and if it isn't a strong base, its a weak base. To determine if a nitrogen has a lone pair or not, you would have to use chem 14A knowledge to draw out the bonds and valence electrons to see if the nitrogen has a lone pair or not.

According to the resource posted by Lavelle, the following hints can help you determine strong acids vs. weak acids and strong bases vs. weak bases:

Acids:
- Many inorganic acids are strong
- Strong acids have high Ka and small pKa values

- Many organic acids are weak
- Weak acids have very small Ka values and large pKa values

Bases:
- Many strong bases are metal hydroxides and metal oxides
- Strong bases have high Kb and small pKb values.

- Many weak bases have a N atom with a lone pair
- Weak bases have very small Kb values and large pKb values

Hope this helps!
