Group 1 and 2 Cations not affecting PH?

Postby Gabriel Barcelona 2L » Fri Jan 26, 2024 5:13 pm

Why is it that Group 1 and Group 2 cations do not affect the pH of salt solutions? Are there any exceptions that we have to know for these?

Because strong bases dissociate completely, they will have the same concentrations in products and reactants in the K equation. I am not really sure of exceptions.

Group 1 and Group 2 cations do not affect the pH of salt solutions because these ions are the conjugates of strong bases and acids that dissociate completely. As a result, their conjugate ions do not react with water and does not effect the pH.
