Achieve week 2+3 Q6

Postby Emily Discussion 3F » Sun Jan 28, 2024 8:25 pm

Why do we ignore the Na+ part of the reaction when finding the pH for the disassociation of NaClO given the Ka of HClO? We dont use it when setting up the ICE table to find the solution?

Hi!

I am not entirely sure if this is right to say, but I believe it is because Na+ is a neutral ion and is neither acidic or basic, so it has no affect on the pH when dissociation occurs. Therefore, we are able to leave it out of the calculations altogether. I hope this helps in some way!
