ions and pH

why do some ions affect pH while others dont. How do we know which ions affect pH?

Ions of strong acids and bases do not affect the pH. As they are spectator ions meaning they appear on both sides of the equilibrium equation, since they appear on both sides of the equation they cancel each other out.
