### Calculating pH

When calculating the logarithm to find the pH of a solution, why is there a negative sign?

There is a negative sign so that we will arrive at positive values on the pH scale.

### Re: Calculating pH

From what i understand, the negative sign is just a way to ensure the pH is always a positive value. Generally, the concentration of ions is very small, so the value will be raised to a negative exponent. For instance, if you have a concentration of 1.0 x 10^-7, taking the negative log will give you positive 7.

### Re: Calculating pH

The negative logarithm is used so that most pH values are positive numbers.
