pH 1-14

Postby Jordan_Wesson_2J » Mon Dec 03, 2018 4:51 pm

why is having a pH outside of the 1-14 range rare?

It it uncommon for the concentration of H3O+ ions to exceed 1M or be less than 10^-14M in solution.

Only a super acid or a super base would make the H+ concentration exceed .1M or less than 10^-14M, which correspond to ph 1 and 14. Because super acids and bases aren't as common as regular ones, values outside the regular pH range are rare.

I because the concentration H30+ tends to lie somewhere between 1 to 10^-14 mol L^-1. Taking the negative logs of these values will only give pH ranges from 1-14.

n short, it is possible to have pH outside of this range but it will be extremely concentrated, resulting in a virtually meaningless pH value. The exception of pH falling in the 1-14 scale can be caused by lowering the concentration of H20 (if not obeying the assumption that water does not have a varying concentration) can cause the H+ concentration to decrease as the acid is added. Hope this makes sense!
