Summary of Topic

Can anyone summarize how to calculate the pH of a salt solution? I am a little confused on how you know how much (in moles or grams) of a salt will dissociate in a solution and how that would end up affecting the pH.

I am fairly certain we will not need these calculations for the final. We will only be calculating pH and pOH of strong acid/base reactions. For that, to calculation pH you would take the negative log of the concentration of H+. I hope this helped.

If the salt has a strong acid or base, you can calculate the moles of H+ and OH- directly as the compound completely breaks up. If it is weak acid, you have to balance the equation, but Professor Lavelle did say that will be covered in 14b.
