Relation between pH and pKa and pKb

Postby Jonathan Zuo 2J » Mon Nov 30, 2015 3:47 pm

Im having trouble determining the relationship between pH and pKa and pKb. Is a low pKa representative of a low pH and a high pKb representative of a high pH?

The larger the Ka the stronger the acid. Because pKa= - log Ka, the larger the Ka, the lower the pKa, the stronger the acid.
ex: If Ka = 10^-7, then pKa= 7
Ka= 10^-4, then pKa=4

Acids have a low pH. A low pKa is associated with a low pH. A low pKb means a strong base. Thus, a high pKb means it would be a weaker base. A lower pKb would have a higher pH than a higher pKb value.
