Acid Rain Formula and pH

Postby Emma Jacquay 2F » Wed Jan 31, 2024 10:55 pm

Hi! Would someone be able to help me figure out the formula for acid rain as well as how to solve for the pH of acid rain? Thanks!

For acid rain, there are two chemical reactions involved in the formation of it.

The first one is the formation of H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) and it has two parts.
2SO2(g) + O2(g) --> 2SO3(g)
SO3(g) + H2O (l) --> H2SO4 (g)

The second one is the formation of HNO3 (nitric acid) and it has two parts.
NO(g) + O2(g) --> NO2(g)
3NO2(g) + H2O(l) --> 2HNO3(g) + NO

The overall equation for acid rain is the sum of the final reaction for both H2SO4 and HNO3 and the sum of those form acid rain.

To calculate the pH of acid rain, you would take the -log of the H+ ion concentration in the dissociation of H2SO4 and HNO3.
