Acid Rain Damage

Postby Sarah Spalding 3E » Sat Nov 18, 2017 11:56 pm

Does anyone know what is of the most concern regarding acid rain? I know that it is bad (and have a few examples of why), but what about it specifically causes such direct damage to an ecosystem?

In the soil acid rain can make the acidity much more acidic and less basic. This can kill plant life that needs a certain pH in order to survive. This water run off enters lakes where fish die from inability to filter the acidity of the water resulting in more death. Overall it makes the environment too acidic for current species to survive in and results in death of many populations.

Acid rain also affects the biodiversity of certain lands and their ecosystems. Some plants are sensitive to acidic environments and may die as the soil/water becomes more acidic. A certain plant species could perish and be replaced by another species. This impacts the entire food web, since plants and animals are interdependent and rely on each other for survival.

Acid rain changes soil pH and usually contains higher concentrations of solutes in the rain. Many different plants, especially ones that live in high rainfall areas, can't tolerate the pH change and the solute increase due to the way their roots work. This is because the solutes can build up in the soil and cause plants to not be able to absorb water (since they do it by osmosis).

Acid rain has the properties to destroy plant life in an area unaccustomed to the pH level that the rain provides. However, this will lead to a growth of plants that are able to withstand the acidic rain and take the place of the plants before then. Heck, maybe this will create a new ecosystem.

Do we think that there are going to be question on the final regarding the chemical makeup and chemical reactions that take place during the formation of acid rain?
