Hi,

what are some ways we can reduce acid rain?

I believe the best way we can reduce acid rain is by producing energy without having to burn fossil fuels. When we burn fossil fuels, CO2 is released into the atmosphere, which is what ultimately causes acid rain when combined with water. We can produce energy without burning fossil fuels by using renewable energy sources like dams, wind turbines, and solar panels to create electric power. Using these renewable energy sources instead of nonrenewable energy sources will reduce acid rain because less pollution is emitted into the atmosphere.

In addition to using renewable resources, new technology can be enforced to remove pollutants. For instance, the textbook mentions how catalytic converters are now used in automobiles to reduce NO to harmless N2. There are more technologies as well that continue to reduce pollutants coming out of automobiles.

As others have mentioned, reducing fossil fuel consumption will reduce the amount of SO2 and NO2 in the atmosphere. I would like to add that coal is a major culprit for releasing these pollutants in the atmosphere, but some scientists have found that burning coal with a lower sulfur content, or "washing" the coal, can help reduce emissions. Also, as consumers, we can switch to renewable energy souces such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and nuclear power. Although none of these energy sources is perfect by any means, at least they don't contribute toward acid rain pollution.
