Reducing Acid Rain

What options or methods are possible to reduce acidity in rain?

Coal factories typically have "scrubbers" installed within their smokestacks. These "scrubbers" usually contain limestone particles. The gases from burning coal leave the factory through the smokestack and must pass through limestone chamber; in here, sulfur dioxide reacts with limestone particles instead of our air in hopes of reducing the acidity within our air and rain.

Additionally, if we are able to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, we can reduce acid rain. That's why it's important for us to be green! If we use renewable energy resources, such a solar, hydroelectric, and wind power, to name a few examples, we will be able to stop using fossil fuels, thus reducing, and hopefully eventually, stopping acid rain.

I just found a study that says adding calcium to acid rain depleted forests will reverse the effects and actually make the forest healthier ! While yes the best ways to prevent it are using less energy and scrubbers, its cool to see how people are "fixing" the problems caused by acid rain.

Another technology that can be used to reduce acid rain is the catalytic converter, which is a device for cars that transforms toxic gases into less toxic pollutants by way of a redox reactions. The combustion reactions that take place in catalytic converters are as follows:

1. 2CO + O2 -> 2CO2
2. CxHy + O2 -> CO2 + H2O
3. 2NO -> N2 + O2

Carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) are both harmful pollutants that contribute to acid rain production.
