Buffers

Postby Rambod Meshgi 3J » Mon Nov 30, 2015 2:22 pm

Does a buffer work differently based on whether it is in a weak acid, weak base, strong acid, or strong base? And do the pHs of the sample impact the effectiveness of the buffer?

Buffers generally help stabilize the pH of the solution they are in. So I think that if a buffer was added to strong acid/base solutions, it would still help maintain the pH of those solutions.

I believe strong acids and bases are poor buffers because their respective conjugate bases/acids are extremely weak. In order to be an effective buffer, both the acid and its conjugate base have to be relatively weak.
