The pH of a Titration

Postby 005778617 » Sun Dec 05, 2021 9:57 pm

Hi,

I was just confused about how to find the pH of a titration. At the stoichiometric point, will the pH always be 7 or does it depend on what acid and base is used in the titration?

If we titrate a strong acid with a weak base or a weak acid with strong base, the resulting solution will not be neutral/it will have a pH other than 7. This is because the strong acid/base overpowers the weak base/acid, leaving a non-neutral solution.

The pH only is equal to 7 when a strong base is titrated with a strong acid or a weak base is titrated with a weak acid as they will neutralize each other.

If a strong base is titrated with a weak acid, the base will overpower the acid and so the pH > 7
If a strong acid is titrated with a weak base, the acid will overpower the base and the pH < 7

Strong acid weak base = low pH
Strong base, weak acid = high pOH

Essentially you want to look at the salt produced at the titration point, as at the titration point you will have the salt and water. If that salt is acidic then the pH of the solution will be less that 7, if that salt is basic then the pH of the solution will be greater than 7.

I believe the pH is dependent on whether the reaction has a stronger acid or stronger base. Although can someone explain what the word titration means?

How do you find how many grams would go in a solution of a certain amount of mL?

the word titration means neutralization. You add a certain amount of grams of a base to a solution that is diluted acid.
