Stoich and End Points

Postby cmatsumura1E » Fri Dec 12, 2014 10:16 am

Why is it important for an end point to be within 1 pH unit of the stoichiometric point?

It is because the closer the end points are to the equivalence point, we have a smaller indicator error and the more accurate the titration will be. I think we both agree we like a more accurate result and less error when we are doing scientific research right?

Also once you are that close, even the smallest addition of the titrant(including a single drop) can shift the ph may past the stoichiometric point.

The key is to find the point at which the acid or base of the sample and the respective acid or base of the titration reach a balance (stoichiometric point), thus it would be important that the end point be close to the stoichiometric point in an accurate reaction.
