Open vs Closed Systems
hi, could someone explain how you determine whether a system is open or closed?

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Open systems exchange both energy and matter with the surroundings (ex: humans). Closed systems only exchange energy with the surroundings (ex: cup of tea with a lid on it).
Hope this helps!

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
An open system can exchange both energy and matter with its surroundings. The stovetop example would be an open system, because heat and water vapor can be lost to the air. A closed system, on the other hand, can exchange only energy with its surroundings, not matter.

whether or not matter can exit or enter.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
In both, energy can exchange with the surroundings. However, in an open system, matter can also exchange with the surroundings, while this is not the case for a closed system.

An open system can transfer both energy and matter in and out while a closed system can only transfer energy in or out.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Open vs. closed systems has to do with whether or not the system can gain or lose energy from the surroundings. Closed systems cannot while open systems can!
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
In an open system, there can be an energy change by adding any materials, changing the temperature, and adding more material. In a closed system, there can be a change of energy through temperature change.
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Hello,
In a closed system, only energy can be exchanged and in an open system both energy and matter may be exchanged. In terms of an open system, you can think about a system that is not in a controlled environment. In an isolated system, mass nor energy can be exchanged, the mass within the system is fixed. I hope this helped!

Open systems exchange energy and matter with its surroundings
Closed systems only exchange energy with its surroundings
Closed systems only exchange energy with its surroundings
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Open system - can exchange both energy and matter with its surroundings e.g. a plant
Closed system - can only exchange energy with its surroundings e.g. a closed beaker
Closed system - can only exchange energy with its surroundings e.g. a closed beaker

Open systems can exchange matter and heat.
Closed systems can only exchange energy/heat.
Closed systems can only exchange energy/heat.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
An open system can exchange matter and heat with its surroundings. On the other hand, a closed system can exchange heat with its surroundings, but not matter. Think of a mug with/without a lid. With a lid would be closed system, without would be an open system.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
Matter and energy can both be exchanged in open systems, while in closed systems only energy can be exchanged.
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
The main difference between open and closed is being able to transfer matter, ex. an open system can transfer matter whereas a closed system cannot, so if there is something like a lid, or a cap this would be closed because matter cannot be transferred, but something like heat still could be.
Re: Open vs Closed Systems
In both open and closed systems, energy can exchange with the surroundings. However, in an open system only, matter can also exchange with the surroundings. These are both different from an isolated system. Hope this helps!

Open systems exchange both energy and matter and closed systems only exchange energy. A isolated system can not exchange matter or energy.

Re: Open vs Closed Systems
An easy way to remember is to think of a boiling pot. An open pot would be an open system where it can exchange both matter and an energy with its surroundings. On the other hand, a closed pot with a lid on it is a closed system which can only exchange energy with it surroundings.
