pH

Postby Michelle Ramirez 3A » Sun Mar 17, 2024 8:13 pm

Hi,

Out of curiosity, what does the p in pH stand for? I never quite knew what to make of it. I'd really appreciate the feedback!

it stands for potential of hydrogen!

There are conflicting claims on what the p represents, but the most common one that I've come across is that the p means "the power of Hydrogen"/"potential of hydrogen" or the german phrase "potenz hydrogen" which translated to the say the same thing. There are some other claims, but these seem to be the most popular!

potential/power of hydrogen, which you can find using pH = -log([H+]). It's a measure of how acidic something is whereas pOH is a measure of how basic something is, which is why they're inversely connected (pH + pOH = 14)

pH is an acronym meaning "power of hydrogen" or "potential of hydrogen." It is a common chemical tool for determining how basic or acidic a solution is. It measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution.
