HW Problem 8.21

Problem 8.21 says, "A piece of copper of mass 20.0g at 10.0 degrees C is placed in a vessel of negligible heat capacity but containing 50.7g of water at 22.0 degrees C. Calculate the final temperature of the water. Assume no energy is lost to the surroundings."

My question: I know that we have to solve for Tfinal, but the problem doesn't give us q. So, the solutions manual just set "heat lost by metal" equal to " -heat gained by water". Why did the solutions manual do that? Is it because no energy is lost to its surroundings?
