Why does the path taken not matter for state properties?

According to the textbook, state properties depend only on the current state of the system. Therefore, if the system is changed from one state to another, the change in a state property is independent of how that change was brought about. We looked at the mountain example in class that highlighted altitude as a state property. Although the path taken by one group was much longer than the other to travel from point A to point B, the change in altitude is the same. We also used another example of altitude from city A to city B to understand the use of enthalpy as a state function, where the standard reaction enthalpy can be calculated by subtracting standard enthalpy of formation of all reactants from standard enthalpy of formation of all products.
