Open/Closed/Isolated
What type of system would you say a fish tank is? It's "closed" but things still go in and out technically but I'm not too sure.

Re: Open/Closed/Isolated
I think the fish tank would be an open system meaning that the system involves the transferring of both matter and energy between system and surroundings. If there are fish in the fish tank then food(matter) would be going in and out of the fish tank. As well as if the system was heated up it would also warm anything around or touching the tank making it an open system .

what actually constitutes the difference between an open and closed system?

I think it would be considered an open system because matter and energy can be transferred in and out of the system. I guess it depends on the experiment being performed in the fish tank or what aspect you're looking at.

In an open system there is a transfer of both mass and heat, but in a closed system there is only a transfer of heat.
Re: Open/Closed/Isolated
In a closed system, only energy is able to be exchanged with its surroundings, but in an isolated system, neither mass or energy is able to be exchanged.
Re: Open/Closed/Isolated
I would say that it is a closed system when the lid is closed but an open system when the lid is not on.

Re: Open/Closed/Isolated
isolated systems are in fixed quantities with no interaction with its outside environment i.e thermos

Re: Open/Closed/Isolated
It would be a closed system with the lid on because mass cannot be transferred from the tank if there is a lid on top, although energy can be transferred
