Adiabatic vs Isolated Systems

Postby Wenting Hu 2H » Wed Jan 17, 2018 12:52 am

Is there a difference between adiabatic processes and isolated systems?

Hi, Wenting,
For isolated systems, only adiabatic processes are possible, as neither heat nor matter is allowed to be transferred. However, adiabatic process can happen in other types of systems as well. For example, you can have an adiabatic process happening in the closed system.

It's important to note that a system with adiabatic walls is not necessarily an isolated system; energy can be transferred to or from the system as work.
