### Problem 8.43

I am not sure hwy the answer for this problem is C instead of either B or D which both seem like reasonable choices because they fulfill the requirements of having a "longer" line for the vaporization than fusion and same is true for the heat capacities. Can someone please enlighten me?

Chapter 8 problem 39? I have this as a heat problem that is not multiple choice so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

I believe the question you are referring to is Problem 8.43. D is not the right answer choice because during a phase change, there is no change in temperature, yet in graph D, during melting and vaporization, there is a positive slope to the line, indicating that there is a temperature change when there shouldn't be. B is not the right answer choice because it states in the problem that the heat capacities for solid and gas are the same. That means that they should have the same slope in the graph. However, in B, the heating slope for the gas is at a different slope than the heating slope for the solid. C is the graph that satisfies the conditions indicated in the problem.

Oops my mistake this is in fact problem 8.43, I have corrected the title. Thank you Diane I thought heat capacity would be indicated by how long that phase of the graph was but I know understand that it is the slope.

I think A isn't the correct choice either because melting is supposed to occur twice as fast as vaporization. In A, it's the opposite; vaporization occurs twice as fast as melting.
