In class Lavelle asked why does steam cause severe burns. Can someone explain this process in depth please.

Re: Steam
Steam causes burns because the amount of heat that 100*C of gas has compared to 100*C of liquid is much higher because the heat of vaporization requires a lot of heat input before phase change (liquid to gas)

Re: Steam
Steam causes more severe burns than boiling water does because the temperature required to convert water to steam is much higher than the temperature required to bring water to a boil. Steam quickly transfers the heat of vaporization to whatever it comes in contact with, which will result in severe damage.

Re: Steam
So water in liquid form boils, and at 100 degrees celsius (boiling point), it turns to steam. The steam can then continue to be heated.

Re: Steam
water is at a higher temp when it is steam, so therefore it would cause a more severe burn
