Differential Thermal Analysis

Postby Yea Eun Lee 1H » Mon Feb 05, 2018 11:53 pm

Do we have to read and understand Box 8.1 in the textbook for the midterm? It talks about the differential thermal analysis.

Considering the readings posted on the syllabus do not include Box 8.1, and since Dr. Lavelle hasn't lectured on it, I assume we would not need to know the information.

The outline for the chapter explicitly includes Box 8.2, but doesn't mention 8.1, so I assume we don't need to. As far as heating curves are concerned, I think you should focus on the steepness of the slope (more steep = lower heat capacity) and the flat lines that appear during phase changes because all the heat goes to converting the phase of the substance, rather than raising the temperature
