Delta T and Sig Figs

Postby Abigail Urbina 1K » Sat Mar 17, 2018 5:38 pm

The first question of the 2015 Final asks you to solve for the specific heat of a substance. The mass is 15.9 g, the initial temperature is 25 degrees C, and the final temperature is 1027 degrees C. When we are rounding off our final answer, what is the correct amount of sig figs we have? I was originally thinking that it was supposed to be 2, since 25 has 2 digits, but the solutions says it should have 3 sig figs.

This leads to my question: Do we consider initial and final temperature values and the amount of digits they have when determining what amount of sig figs our final answer has?

Yes, because they are measurements. Anything that is measured has to consider sig figs.
