Enthalpy and States

Postby Tamera Scott 1G » Thu Jan 24, 2019 4:41 pm

Does the state of matter affect the enthalpy?

Enthalpy is heat absorbed or released at a constant pressure. Also, enthalpy is a state property so its specific value would be dependent on its current state, specifically the final minus the initial.

Yes the state of matter will affect the enthalpy. A liquid of a substance will have a different enthalpy than a gas of the same substance.

Yup! Enthalpy is related to states and the enthalpy change of one state will be different than the enthalpy change of a different state.

State of matter does affect enthalpy. The value of enthalpy between liquid water and vapor will be different.

The enthalpy of a substance in its gaseous form > enthalpy in liquid form > enthalpy in solid form.
This is because heat is required to change a substance from solid to liquid, and liquid to gas.

Yes, when calculating net enthalpy change, you will have to take into account enthalpy changes between states of matter

Yes the state of matter will definitely affect enthalpy because different amounts of heat are required to change a substance through each phase.

State does affect enthalpy. That is why you need to add the enthalpy of the phase change for reactions where there is a phase change.
