Why steam at 100 C burns more than liquid at 100 C

Hello,

I'm still confused about why steam causes more severe burns at 100 degrees celsius compared to liquid at 100 degrees celsius. Is it because more energy is required for liquid to become gas, so it releases more energy when it touches skin (which is significantly cooler than steam)?

Yes, steam at 100 degrees Celsius first undergoes a phase change from gas to liquid while remaining at the same temperature, releasing heat via condensation. Now, you are left with water at 100 Celsius which releases energy as same as the sample that started off as water at 100 degrees Celsius. This extra energy released causes more severe burns as a result.

To add onto it, steam condensing to liquid releases over 40 kJ of heat while liquid freezing into a solid releases around 5 kJ of heat.
