### State Properties

For lecture on Wednesday, I think he mentioned that enthalpy, pressure, volume and temperature are state properties but why are work and heat not considered as state properties?

Hello,
I believe that work is not a state function because it is proportional to the distance an object is moved. The path taken to get to final is needed to calculate amount of work, but state functions depend only on the state it is in not how it got to that state. Hope this helped!

State functions only depend on their current state. For example, if you wanted to calculate the change in enthalpy, you would have to subtract the initial enthalpy from the final enthalpy. You can have different inputs of work but still attain the same change in enthalpy. It is similar to the work preformed when climbing a mountain and you have to decide between taking a shorter route and a longer route. The change in altitude would be the same but taking the longer route would take much more work.

State functions only depend on the initial and final state, not how the final state was obtained. Heat and work on the other hand, do not describe states but the amount of energy taken in or exerted during a process.

work and Heat are not considered state properties because they are dependent on the path taken.

remember state properties are only looking at the initial and final and nothing in between.
